28/03/2010 CCTV Leaflets

VPRA reps delivered leaflets to houses on Fordy Grove, Briar and Hawthorn roads that back on to the Blackpath.  Copy Below.

Dear Resident

We are contacting you on behalf of the above residents association in respect of a request from a resident in Fordy Grove to have the CCTV camera and lighting along the Black Path replaced and improved. This follows a recent spate of problems along the Black Path.

This was discussed at our recent meeting and we promised to explore the possibilities of replacing both the street lighting and the old camera. To replace the camera and have it viewed at the Stockton Monitoring Centre it would need a new pole, up to twice the height of the one that is currently in place. Approximate costings would be over £20,000 for the new CCTV unit, including the WFI link back to Stockton. This would need to be obtained through any grants we can obtain and there is an open time span on this due to the applications process. We did look at his last July but funding was not available and according to Police figures there is very little Anti Social Behaviour around the Black Path that is reported to make any application viable. This is not to say there are no problems but very few if any are reported to police.

We can only proceed with the project if the residents that live back to back with the Black Path agree with everything that is to be done. Then we would have to obtain planning permission from SBC before trying to get the funding.

If you agree, disagree or have any comments then we need you to tell us. We will not force the issue if residents are not totally for it as we do not want anyone to feel uncomfortable with CCTV overlooking their house windows.

Please contact the VPRA either by email to peter @vpra.org.uk or letter to

26/03/2010 Thornaby Pride

VPRA have two articles in the spring Thornaby Pride. One about bulb planting and the other about Thornaby Show. The full un edited Thornaby Show article is below.

Thornaby Show History

The show has had many venues over the years since it conception .It has been held in all parts of Thornaby and organised Thornaby Horticultural Society, Thornaby Amateur Gardeners and now Thornaby Town Council. In its early years it was on The Village Green and better known as the Thornaby Feast. It has since been held at venues such as, The Village School, Queen St. Community Centre, the Robert Atkinson School, the Harold Wilson Centre, Baptist Church and the Pavilion.

 THE START OF THORNABY SHOW

The first show was held on August 6th 1945 organised by residents of Thornaby Village ,and led to a meeting held on August 13th in the Oddfellows Arms at 7.30pm to discuss the formation of a Horticultural Society ,the meeting so agreed , the appointment of officers took place ,notably Mr J R Carr , The Town Clerk was voted in as President ,Vice Presidents, Group Captain Ward ,Doctor Mackay ,Mr T Malcolm ,Mr A Canwell and Mr G Shickle . The management positions were as follows Chairman Mr E Sockett, Secretary Mr A Peacock, Ass` Secretary Mr A Rudd, and Treasurer Mr Robinson.

The next meeting was held in the Oddfellows Arms, at 7.30pm August 27th 1945 this dealt with the proposed rules of the Society, one decision concerned the limitation of membership and the following boundaries were defined, all residents on the West Side of Thornaby Road from the Andrews Allotments to the Two Mile Cottages and the East Side of Thornaby Road from The Gilpin Brown Allotments to the Aerodrome, all residents of Millbank Lane, The Green, Orchard Road, Brisbane Crescent and Basselton Lane. The membership decision can be explained by realising that the residents of Thornaby Village considered their area as still being a village , there was a vast amount of open countryside certainly on three sides of the village ,and the formation of a show and Society took place a very short time after peace was declared , they had faced the rigours and heartache of six years of wartime , the prime movers were in the main mature people who held positions of authority and prominent businessmen who displayed the admirable British spirit of overcoming adversity and getting back to normal , the younger people were away on wartime service and it would be considerable time before those who had survived returned home. The original show had the flower, veg, Homecraft and Handicrafts along with small attractions and children’s races.

So the Village Show was born and the residents gave considerable support in fund raising and of course running the show, many twists and turns have taken place over the years involving the show but that is a story for another time.

Thornaby Show in the 1980`s was seen to be a benchmark for exhibitors. If you were any good at growing flowers and veg. you had to show at Thornaby. It was normally held on the August Bank Holiday Monday, so people were not at work and good crowds were guaranteed. Showmen came from all over the north east to exhibit at Thornaby, produce ranged from exhibition roses and gladioli to giant leeks, onions and cabbages.

Many a show, people came straight from the allotments with an enormous cabbage in their wheelbarrow, far too big to carry. The show also catered for the ladies with Homecraft and Handicraft sections. It also had some of the best floral art exhibits in the north east, especially the class for an arrangement of flowers in an unusual container. People had a tremendous imagination and exhibits were seen in things like, football boots, potties, tea pots, kettles, hollowed out marrows and cabbages. One year there was even a toilet and a kitchen sink.

The show ran into difficulties in the early 90`s with the loss off key committee members due to old age and illness and it was decided to fold the show up in 1994. Some of the many Trophies that were presented to the show were passed back to relatives of the people who originally donated them and profits in the bank were donated to charity (Butterwick Trust).

In 1996 the newly formed Town Council decided to hold a show, This was in mid June (wrong time of year really but it was a success)at the Robert Atkinson Community Centre. They managed to involve the few remaining committee of the old show as advisors and since then the show has been going from strength to strength.

The venue for the current show is back at the Harold Wilson Centre and the show held in 1999 saw record attendances, hopefully the standard of exhibition in the horticultural sections will improve and the novices now showing will turn out to be better than their peers. There are classes for roses, gladioli, dahlia etc, and all types of veg.

The show is now at its permanent home on the Harold Wilson Playing Fields and is supported very strongly by Thornaby Town Council with funds from the council precept. Unfortunately the show had to be cancelled at short notice in 2008 due to a flooded field but everyone rallied round to ensure that the show went on in 2009 and was a great success.

20/03/2010 Care For Your Area

The VPRA keep a running record for everything we report to CFYA for action, be it litter, illegal dumping, potholes or over grown trees and hedges.

In the past year the average response time from report to reply is less than 1 day and the average action on litter and illegal dumping is same day to clear. Most pothole reports are actioned within 5 working days. It is important that CFYA get reports from residents, as we have said many times  the only way CFYA can help is is we (and you tell them) Contact them directly or by this site.

The litter bin near the play area was forced from its concrete plinth and tipped over.A number of full lager bottles were left nearby. This is in full view of the CCTV unit and VPRA has contacted Enforcement to have the tapes viewed. If there are any images of vandals we do hope that a prosecution will take place.

07/03/2010 Black Bobbies Painting Morning

VPRA reps went down to  Black Bobbies to take pictures of the SBC Painting morning. Unfortunately when we got there at 10.30 everything had packed up and gone.Probably because of the hard frost  during the night people didnt bother to have a go at painting in the cold. As is normally the case, after the organisers packed up and went home a number of visitors arrived to see what was supposed to be happening. Hopefully SBC will try this again in the summer.

02/03/2010 CFYA Actions

Over the past year VPRA has contacted CFYA over 50 times with problems requiring assistance. The average reply time to emails is same day and actions were mostly same or next day with road repairs being completed within 5 working days. This is excellent service and proves how well groups can work with our council officers.

01/03/2010 Reporting Problems

If you see dumped litter, broken lamposts etc then either report to CFYA or to VPRA via the email button on this site.

01/03/2010 Rubbish Dumping

VPRA reported two incidents spotted on Sunday.

First was an ASDA trolley full of household waste, bottles and tins left inside the park gates off Park Road entrance.
