May 24 2008 by Naomi Corrigan, Evening Gazette

A PARK in Thornaby continues to blossom thanks to a £60,000 Lottery boost.

Over the past two years, the Village Park Residents Association, together with Stockton Council, has been working towards an application for funding to improve the local park.

The facility now boasts a play park and CCTV camera surveillance in a bid to improve security.

Future plans for the park include a new multi-use games area, a footpath around the perimeter of the park with exercise facilities, as well as old fashioned children’s games, seating and a picnic area.

Peter Brennan, secretary of the association, said: “The VPRA began the rejuvenation of the Village Park when we, with the help of Tracy Roberts from Stockton Residents and Community Groups Association, obtained funding for the play area and the security equipment.

“The new plans are stage two of our drive to make the Village Park a place people come to rather than pass through.

“We are now inviting locals to have a say in the shaping of the next stage of the work in the park through our latest consultation exercise.”

Stewart Featherstone, chairman of the association, said they eventually hope to win Green Flag status for the park.

“This is a long way ahead of us but it would be an excellent sign of how the park has become something local people are beginning to take pride in,” he said.

MP for Stockton South, Dari Taylor, said: “The Village Park Residents Association is an excellent and committed group, who work extremely hard for the benefit of the community.”
